PSV defender Hector Moreno was Uefa’s choice for man of the match in last night’s Champions League match with Manchester United, despite his horror tackle on Luke Shaw.

The England left-back suffered a double leg break after a heavy 15th minute challenge from the Mexican defender, with Shaw receiving oxygen as he lay on the field for ten minutes. He has undergone surgery and will remain in Eindhoven as he begins his recovery.

Moreno, who was not penalised for the tackle, went on to play a key role in PSV’s comeback 2-1 win, heading in the equaliser against the run of play as the Dutch champions stunned Louis van Gaal’s side.

The Uefa website praised the Mexican international’s “prowess in the air” and labelled him “a rock at the back”. However Van Gaal was far from impressed with the defender’s actions. He suggested that it was a penalty and a red card, stopping short of confirming that belief as he felt it would make him look like a bad loser.

The centre-back has since apologised for the tackle and said: “I just feel really bad because I was involved in the accident. I feel really sorry.”

Uefa does not plan to review the incident or take action against Moreno.
