Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere came close to a loan move to Trabzonspor this summer, according to the Turkish side’s president.

Wilshere, who is in the final year of his contract, was free to consider moves away from the Emirates this summer and was linked with the likes of Sampdoria and Birmingham City.

The 25-year-old has been rebuilding his fitness with the Arsenal squad after the broken leg that ended his loan spell at Bournemouth last season.

However Trabzonspor president Muharrem Usta, who had also tried to sign Moussa Sissoko this summer, claims to have held discussions with Wilshere over a loan switch to Turkey.

“I held direct talks with Jack Wilshere,” Usta told reporters in Turkey.

“We wanted him on loan and were close to a deal but the move stalled at the last moment.”

Wilshere is in contention to feature against Cologne in Thursday’s Europa League tie, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirming after Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth that he was “not far” from playing.
