Juan Mata believes Jadon Sancho is a “great player” as Manchester United continue to be linked with the winger.

Sancho has an extensive list of suitors after another stunning campaign to date, scoring 17 goals and assisting 19 in 35 Borussia Dortmund appearances prior to football shutting down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Leading figures at Dortmund believe United are indeed winning the race to acquire one of Europe’s hottest properties, although an initial £120million asking price may prove troublesome.

Mata – speaking on an Instagram live stream on Thursday as part of his Common Goal coronavirus help fund – heaped praise on the 20-year-old but refused to comment on the speculation.

Asked about the ongoing transfer talk, Mata said: “Should we sign Jadon Sancho?

“What do you want me to say? We all know he’s a great player. He’s having a fantastic season at Dortmund.

“But it’s not my responsibility to speak about those things. I like him as a player but I cannot reply to that.”

The 31-year-old Spaniard – who had promised a surprise earlier in the live stream – was swiftly joined by Sancho’s Dortmund team-mate Mats Hummels.

The German defender was clearly listening intently to Mata’s words and said: “I was listening to you talking about Sancho! I understand that.”
