Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admitted that his England colleague had got Everton "out of jail" with a "wonder strike".

"I think it was three points we deserved," he told BT Sport. "Over the 90 minutes with the chances we created we are disappointed not to get three points."

The Liverpool captain also had a dig at his critics, adding: "It was nice to remind people that although I am 34, I can still run and still play."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers took the opportunity to praise his "incredible" and "outstanding" captain, but was clearly unhappy with not getting the victory.

"We were clearly the dominant side in the game," he said. "Everton are very fortunate to come away from here with a point."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said of Jagielka's goal: "It was an outstanding strike - a real example of the character and the DNA at this club."

Phil Jagielka admitted that "the swinging worked" when he let rip from 25 yards to rescue a point for Everton at Liverpool.

The England defender's injury time strike was unstoppable and cancelled out Steven Gerrard's 65th minute free-kick.

Jagielka said that a couple of minutes before his goal he had the chance to shoot but elected to pass and regretted it.

However the next time he decided he would "have a swing".

"The swinging worked," he said. "A point is decent but we would have loved three. Going into the last few minutes 1-0 down to get a point is fantastic."
