Jordan Pickford: Sweden 'killed' England's tempo in European Under-21 Championship opener

Jordan Pickford admitted Sweden's game-plan to stifle England worked well in their European Under-21 Championship opener on Friday as the goalkeeper admitted joining Everton is the "best move" for his career.

England came into their Group A clash with Sweden U21s having won six of their eight qualifying games and conceding just three goals as Aidy Boothroyd's side topped the standings.

But despite some early chances against Sweden, England were largely contained by the opposition - who won this competition two years ago - before being handed a scare when Ben Chilwell's sliding challenge on Linus Wahlqvist in the area handed them a penalty in the 79th minute.

Pickford, who completed a £30million move from Sunderland to Everton on Thursday to become the Toffees' club-record signing, saved the resulting spot-kick, however, to salvage a point for England.

Following his heroics at the Kielce City Stadion, the 23-year-old admitted Sweden's plan to stop England worked to a certain extent but the goalkeeper urged his teammates to win their next two games in Poland and continue their progression in the competition.

He told Sky Sports: "The main thing is not to lose the game. The first game is always tight and we came away with a draw. It's down to us to win the next two.

"I waited longer and held my ground and got to the penalty, that's what you do. Sweden killed our tempo a bit, they had a gameplan to let us have the ball at the back and now we move on to Monday."

When then asked about his big-money transfer to Everton, Pickford replied: "It's nice to get my move out of the way so I can concentrate and focus on the tournament.

"Everton was the best move for me."
