Jose Riga urges Charlton to play it safety first

Survival bid: Jose Riga wants to seal Championship status on Tuesday

Charlton will be safe from relegation if they beat Watford tonight and Jose Riga is desperate to make sure of survival before the final day of the season.

Riga, whose team are two points above the Championship drop zone with a game in hand, said: “We know what we have to do. We know that our destiny is still in our hands and I hope we will do it tonight, and not wait for the last one.

“What gives me the confidence is what the players have already done in the past. We have beaten big teams like Leeds and Nottingham Forest and we had a good result against Bournemouth. We must be more efficient because we know that everything is important for us. But I believe in my team.”

Watford’s hopes of reaching the play-offs ended with defeat at Derby on Saturday but manager Beppe Sannino wants his side to end the season strongly.

He said: “The players are perfectly aware that our season ends on Saturday. Until that date, they must be professional and they must respect the people that come to watch us play. I am sure they will do that.

“Every player is under exam every game. These next two matches are important because we need to finish in a good way and we need to look at the players for next season. I am expecting good commitment and good performances.”
