Kalou and Mikel set to stay at Chelsea

11 April 2012

Chelsea stars Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel now look set to stay at Stamford Bridge next season following the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The duo were understood to have grown unsettled under the Italian as they struggled to secure a regular starting role in the second half of the campaign.

Both players were believed to be considering their futures at Stamford Bridge, while there was increased speculation that the club might sell them anyway.

Kalou was particularly disappointed at his treatment having hit a personal best of 13 goals this term, yet he still started only 22 matches.

Ancelotti has already paid the price for a disappointing season by being fired on Sunday, but the club are due to make a number of changes to the squad this summer.

However, Chelsea want to keep Kalou and Mikel, who are 25 and 24 respectively, because their priority is to get rid of some of the older members of the squad and keep what young players they have in the ranks.

Both players are keenly waiting for who Chelsea will appoint as Ancelotti's replacement, which is expected to be Guus Hiddink after Turkey play a Euro 2012 qualifier at Belgium next week.

Kalou and Mikel, who both arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2006, thrived under Hiddink during his brief three month spell in charge in 2009 and will look forward to playing under him again.

The former has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past, but the club may even decide to hand Kalou a new contract as his current deal runs out next year. Mikel still has three years left to run on his contract.
