Leyton Orient boss Ian Hendon hopes he can avoid the Manager of the Month curse as the club look to maintain their perfect start to the season at Exeter tomorrow.

Hendon was today awarded the League Two honour for August, with Manchester City the only other club in the top four divisions to win all their League games from the start of the season.

But Hendon has joked the award normally means clubs are destined to lose their next game and insists he will not let his players think promotion back to League One at the first attempt is a formality.

“I’ve won the Manager of the Month award and we all know what that means!” said Hendon, who made it a double celebration as midfielder Dean Cox won Player of the Month. “It is good company to be up there with Manchester City.

“It’s a great start but we have to keep our feet on the ground and worry about the next game. It is my job to maintain that.

“At the start of the season I said we had to get into that winning habit as soon as possible but I didn’t think it would happen this quickly.

“There were a lot of changes at the club and we had to bring in a whole backroom staff but I’m very pleased.”

However Hendon, whose side lost 2-1 at Luton in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in midweek, has cautioned his players against any complacency.

He added: “The expectation now is that we are going to cruise through this season and get promoted but that is totally not the case.

“It is a long season with 46 games and will be a tough battle.”
