Liverpool FC fail in controversial bid to trademark word 'Liverpool' amid backlash from fan groups

Liverpool Football Club’s attempt to trademark the word ‘Liverpool’ in the context of football products and services has been unsuccessful.

Anfield chiefs registered their application with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) after the Reds secured their sixth European Cup victory in June.

However, the move was quickly met by strong opposition from fan groups such as Spirit of Shankly and interested parties from across the city, including local amateur club City of Liverpool FC and mayor Joe Anderson.

Liverpool’s CEO Peter Moore insisted that the club were acting to protect themselves from large-scale counterfeiting operations, rather than clamping down on independent traders.

But the subsequent furore later caused a shift in attitude at Anfield, with one insider telling Standard Sport earlier this month that it was hoped the application would be rejected.

That has proved to be the case, with the IPO citing “the geographical significance” of the city’s name as the reason behind their decision.

And the Reds have revealed in a statement released through their official website that no appeal will be lodged.

Moore said: “It should be stressed that our application was put forward in good faith and with the sole aim of protecting and furthering the best interests of the club and its supporters.

“Nevertheless, we accept the decision and the spirit in which it has been made.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to reiterate our thanks to all those who engaged with us throughout this process, most notably independent traders and local football clubs.”
