Louis van Gaal's decision to walk out of a pre-match press conference yesterday was the most 'gripping' moment of Manchester United's season, according to Robbie Savage.

The Red Devils are struggling for form and have failed to win any of their last six games, which has seen pressure mount on the Dutchman's position at Old Trafford.

Speculation that Van Gaal is on the brink of being sacked has been rife in recent days and the 64-year-old was in no mood to discuss matters with the media ahead of his side's Boxing Day clash with Stoke.

Van Gaal launched a five-minute rant at journalists before he demanded an apology for the way he had been treated and cut his media duties short.

But Savage has claimed that the manager would not be facing such a difficult situation if his team produced similarly dramatic displays on the pitch.

"Louis van Gaal's press conference was Manchester United's most gripping moment of the season," he told the Mirror.

"Had Manchester United's performances on the pitch been as dramatic as Van Gaal's five-minute Christmas address, he would not be fighting to save his job."

Van Gaal's possession based style of play is at odds with the brand of football which defined United during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure and Savage believes the Dutchman should apologise for employing it at the Theatre of Dreams.

"Instead of asking for an apology from the media over rumours that you had been sacked, how about apologising for your dreary football, Louis?

"It's all very well pointing out that United were top of the Premier League four weeks ago.

"But today they are nine points off the pace in the title race.

"When you are Manchester United manager, speculation goes with the territory, especially when results and performances are so poor."

United travel to the Britannia Stadium on Saturday and host champions Chelsea two days later.
