Luke Shaw will miss England’s friendly with Switzerland and will return to Manchester United on Monday.

Shaw suffered a head injury in what was his first starting appearance for the Three Lions in three years against Spain in a Uefa Nations League match Saturday.

The left-back was attended to by medical staff for seven minutes before he was stretchered off the pitch early on in the second half.

The FA announced Shaw was “awake and alert” shortly after the final whistle at Wembley with the player later adding he was “doing fine” with a post on Twitter.

English football’s governing body has confirmed however the defender is not in contention for Tuesday’s match against the Swiss at the King Power Stadium and will return to Manchester today after being assessed throughout the day on Sunday.

Shaw has enjoyed a superb start to the 2018-19 season at Old Trafford and is the only outfield member of Jose Mourinho’s squad to have been ever-present in his starting XI in the opening four matches.

United travel to Watford, one of only three sides in the Premier League to have made a perfect start to the season, on Saturday.
