Manchester City v Wigan: Safety first from Roberto Martinez

Wigan face Manchester City tonight in a dress rehearsal of next month’s FA Cup Final but manager Roberto Martinez insists Premier League survival is the only thing on his team’s mind.

Martinez’s side, who booked their place in next month’s Final with a 2-0 win against Millwall, are three points from safety with seven matches remaining but they have two games in hand.

“It would be very easy for us to say what a great achievement it is to play in the FA Cup Final,” said Martinez, who wants to avoid the fate of Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, both of whom were relegated at the end of seasons in which they reached the Final.

“But in terms of assessing the season, it can only be a success when we stay in the Premier League — otherwise we won’t be satisfied at all.”
