Manchester City youngster Douglas Luiz is set to complete a repeat loan move to Girona FC, having previously spent time there last season.

Pep Guardiola wanted the Brazilian midfielder to be part of his squad this season after failing to secure a work permit will now be allowed to continue his development at Manchester City’s sister club in Spain.

Luiz was a £10million signing from Vasco da Gama and is seen as a future first-team player at the Etihad.

And Guardiola’s failure to sign cover for Fernandinho - missing out on Jorginho and Fred since January - meant the 20-year-old’s progress was set to be fast-tracked this term.

The Home Office’s decision not to grant him a work permit was greeted with dismay at City and Guardiola made little secret of his disappointment when confirming Luiz’s departure on Friday.

“Luiz is going to Girona to try to play and show his quality,” he said. “Finally the big bosses can allow the work permit, confirming the opinions we have right now.”

Another City starlet, Brahim Diaz could also go on loan before the European transfer window closes on Friday evening.
