Manchester United lead Sir Alex Ferguson well wishes as former manager recovers in hospital

Manchester United led the footballing world in wishing the best for their most successful manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

The club confirmed on Saturday that the 76-year-old, who retired from his role as boss at Old Trafford in 2013, had undergone emergency surgery having suffered a brain haemorrhage.

The statement confirmed that surgery had gone well, but that their legendary former boss needed a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.

In his time at the club, among other trophies, Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

United signed off their statement saying: “Everyone at Manchester United sends our very best wishes.”

Arsenal, whose outgoing manager Arsene Wenger was presented with a commemorative gift by Ferguson in Manchester on Sunday, tweeted: “We’re all thinking of you, Sir Alex.”

Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea were among a number of Premier League clubs to send their wishes, while Manchester United captain Michael Carrick said: "Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Be strong Boss."

England and United star Ashley Young tweeted: "Gutted to hear the news tonight about Sir Alex. Don’t really know what else to say other than thoughts and prayers with you and your family, Boss"

Before his move to Old Trafford in 1986, Ferguson cut his teeth in management with Aberdeen and St. Mirren, winning three Scottish Premiership titles and five domestic cups during an eight-year spell with the former.

The Scottish Premiership side added their well wishes in a statement, which said: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone connected with Aberdeen Football Club are with our former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following tonight’s news."
