Manchester United's Jose Mourinho claims his £300m transfer spending is 'not enough' to compete with Man City

Jose Mourinho asserted that he has not spent enough money at Manchester United to compete with Premier League title rivals Man City.

Jesse Lingard came off the bench to spare United a Boxing Day defeat at the hands of Burnley, scoring twice to rescue a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Lingard answered a half-time SOS with United staring down the barrel at 2-0 down, but pulled one back with an instinctive back-heel before striking through a packed box in added time to cap a frantic finale.

The draw means Pep Guardiola's City can move 16 points ahead of their neighbours if they beat Newcastle tomorrow, with champions Chelsea now level on points with second-placed United.

Despite breaking a then-world record transfer fee of £89million to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford in the summer of 2015, Mourinho insists he has not spent enough money - around £300m in total - to cope with City's level of finance.

Following the draw against Burnley, Mourinho told reporters: "It is not enough - Manchester City are buying full-backs for the price of strikers.

"The price for big clubs are different to the price for other clubs."
