Manchester United wanted Alphonso Davies but ‘did not have same vision’ as Bayern Munich

English fans got a glimpse of Davies' talent in the Champions League clash with Chelsea in March

The former coach of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has revealed how Jose Mourinho and Manchester United missed out on the chance to sign the young full-back.

Davies has become one of Europe’s most highly-rated young talents, exhibiting his ability on the biggest stage when tearing Chelsea apart in Bayern’s Champions League win at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.

He could, however, have been plying his trade at Old Trafford instead, with the Reds having tracked him as a teenager, when he was playing for Edmonton Strikers in Canada.

Nick Huoseh was manager there at the time and has told of how United’s hesitancy allowed Bayern to swoop.

"I met with one or two other clubs, but speaking with the Bayern guys and seeing their plan I thought it was the best place for Alphonso.

"Honestly, I was being offered things that guys might jump on but Bayern had a small squad, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were retiring, and it was just a good fit.

"They showed his position on the field, where he was going to play, they showed how they had 19 players in their squad, play 50 something games a year, play a lot of matches a year and the average player plays 80 per cent of the matches."
