Former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes believes Manchester United's latest signing Bastian Schweinsteiger is 'right up there' with Franz Beckenbauer.

Van Gaal has pursued the midfielder for the past two summers and secured his services with the offer of personal terms which could see him earn £135,000 a week.

And Heynckes, who won an historic treble at the Allianz Arena during his final season as boss in 2013, has branded the Germany international an 'icon' and believes there will never be another player like him.

"Bastian was the heart and soul of the team at Bayern. He did everything in the team's best interest rather than think about himself," Heynckes told Kicker.

"He is a true icon for the Bayern fans, someone they can identify themselves with.

"Schweinsteiger is right up there with Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller. The Bundesliga and German football will miss him.

"There will not be another player like him at Bayern."
