West Brom have agreed an initial £6m fee with Manchester United to sign defender Jonny Evans.

The centre back will travel to the Hawthorns on Saturday and the proposed move, which also includes £2m worth of add-ons, is expected to be completed over the weekend prior to Tuesday's transfer deadline.

The Northern Irishman progressed through United's youth academy, made 198 appearances for the Red Devils and won three Premier League titles at the club.

Once a key member of the side, the 27-year-old fell out of favour udner Louis van Gaal and made just 14 top-flight appearances last season.

Evans was involved in a spitting incident with Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse and has featured for United just once since he completed a six-match ban for the offence.

West Brom had been in the market for a defender since a move for Tottenham's Federico Fazio broke down and manager Tony Pulis praised Evans durig his press conference on Friday afternoon.

"Jonny would be a great signing for the football club but it's down to the money men and his side," Pulis said.

Evans will not be available in time to feature in his new side's fixture against Stoke City this weekend.
