Wayne Rooney is expected to be in the Manchester United squad to face Arsenal on Saturday despite pulling out of England’s match last night through injury.

Rooney missed the 2-2 draw with Spain having sustained a minor knee problem against Scotland four days earlier.

The 31-year-old was unable to train with his England team-mates on Sunday and was sent back to Old Trafford 24 hours later.

England insist the injury was genuine and was not a punishment for consuming alcohol in the team’s hotel on Saturday evening while wearing official kit.

The forward is not facing disciplinary action over the incident. Rooney and the rest of the England players had been given time off and did not break any rules by having a drink.

The striker left England mainly as a precaution and is fit enough to play in the high-profile match at Old Trafford, although he faces a challenge to be named in the starting line-up.
