Alexis Sanchez has denied accusations of unprofessional behaviour at Manchester United, but has apologised to fans following the club's disappointing season.

Sanchez has become the poster-boy for United's fall from grace since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013, with the Chilean struggling to justify his stratospheric wages since signing from Arsenal in January 2017.

The former Arsenal forward has scored just two goals all season for United, with one of those coming in the Premier League as the Red Devils finished sixth in the table.

Sanchez has struggled badly during his brief spells on the pitch in an injury-hit campaign, while his wages - believed to be in excess of £400,000-a-week - have caused difficulties for United in their negotiations with other squad members, most notably David de Gea and Ander Herrera.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made no secret of the fact that Sanchez's future at the club depends on the player himself finding a solution to his slump in form and fitness, and the forward took to Instagram to apologise to fans.

Sanchez's Instagram post read: "It was a very tough season...the fan are the ones who deserve an apology as they always support you no matter what happens.

"Personally, I didn’t perform as much as I was expecting because of unpredictable injuries.

"Press and people were speculating of things that were not even true. I was always a professional in all aspects.

"I apologise to the fans for not be able to achieve our goals,Nevertheless we are Manchester United!

"Players and Staff are questioning if we were doing the right thing and if we were giving our best for this football shirt ... I'm certain that Manchester United one day will return to be the club, as it was in the old days with Mr. Alex Ferguson."
