Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confident Man Utd are closing in on contract agreement with David de Gea

Ole Gunnar Solskjær believes Manchester United are on the verge of a breakthrough over David de Gea’s contract.

The Spain goalkeeper has been locked in talks over the summer, with United tabling a latest improved offer of more than £350,000-a-week.

It’s believed the fresh terms will be enough to convince the 28-year-old to end the uncertainty over his future and commit to a four-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

Solskjær said: “David has had a summer where he's been negotiating and we hope we're going to get it sorted. I'm positive.

“With David I've said many times how lucky I am and happy we are to have him in goal.

De Gea has been holding out to be made United’s highest paid player, on parity with Alexis Sanchez, on around £450,000-a-week.

While United are prepared to make him the highest paid keeper in the world, they have been reluctant to commit themselves to another contract of that size.

But there has been growing optimism a compromise could be reached, with the club’s chief negotiator Matt Judge continuing talks with De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes throughout the summer.

United know this window is their last chance to command top money for De Gea, who will be free to speak to foreign clubs from January.

But they are adamant they will not sell even if an agreement cannot be reached before the start of the season - and are prepared to risk losing him for nothing as they continue to try to find a breakthrough.
