Mario Gotze will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season on a free transfer, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said Saturday that he spoke with World Cup winner Gotze in the last few days and they agreed he would move on for next season.

"I believe this makes sense for both parties," Zorc said.

Gotze scored the winning goal against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final, catapulting him to hero status in Germany.

The 27-year-old forward has played 218 times for Dortmund in two spells with the club but has struggled to earn game time this season.

Gotze will be available on a free this summer. Liverpool won't be in the race for him.

The attacker has been linked with West Ham, and will likely have a number of offers given the impact of coronavirus on the transfer market.

With clubs set to slash their transfer budgets due to the financial implications of Covid-19, players available for free - such as Gotze - will be hot property.
