Mauricio Pochettino has insisted Tottenham's 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in Melbourne was a "great experience" for his young side.

Spurs began the encounter brightly and forced eventual man of the match Jan Oblak into a succession of saves during the opening exchanges.

Erik Lamela and Joshua Onomah were both denied by the woodwork but Diego Simeone's side grew into the game and went in front thanks to Diego Godin's close-range finish.

The Uruguayan defender's strike proved to be enough to secure victory but Spurs stuck to their task in the second half and were unfortunate not to claim an equaliser late on.

Pochettino, whose willingness to promote young players is often cited as a key reason behind Tottenham's progress last term, finished the game with a side almost entirely made up of academy graduates and was pleased with how the youngsters performed.

"It was a fantastic performance and a great experience for us. I am very happy with this young team," Pochettino told the club's official website.

"Their goalkeeper was man of the match which says a lot.

"We finished the game with 9 players who have come through the academy - great," he added.

Marcus Edwards is among those to have caught the eye during the International Champions Cup while both Will Miller and Harry Winks pressed their respective claims for regular game time in the forthcoming season.

Spurs will return to the capital without a win to their name after back-to-back defeats to Atleti and Juventus, but Pochettino has plenty to ponder, having had a chance to asses the youngsters at his disposal against two Champions League heavyweights.

Tottenham face Inter Milan in their final pre-season friendly on August 5, when the majority of the club's Euro 2016 internationals are expected to return.
