Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham will be one of the Champions League's 'toughest' teams - Massimiliano Alegri

Massimiliano Allegri has backed Tottenham to go far in the Champions League this season despite Spurs' 2-1 pre-season defeat to Juventus on Tuesday.

The Italian champions raced into a two-goal lead early on in the International Champions Cup clash in Melbourne, with Paulo Dybala and Mehdi Benatia capitalising on defensive blunders from Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino's side improved after the interval as Erik Lamela scored before Spurs went close late on, and Allegri was thankful for the workout against a side he considers to be one of the contenders for next season's Champions League trophy.

Allegri took to Twitter after the game to write: "Good test against one of the toughest team (sic) in the next Champions League: thank you #Melbourne for supporting us!"

While Spurs started badly in Melbourne as they conceded twice in the opening 13 minutes, Pochettino was happy with the second-half response from a young tour squad lacking a number of star players recovering from Euro 2016.

Pochettino told the club's official website: "It was a very good second half & in the end I'm happy. It's not about the result it's about pre-season.

"It was a great experience for us. Lots of things to learn and lots of positives. I'm very pleased with our young players.

"Our supporters were fantastic. Hopefully they were pleased with the second half & proud of our young players."
