Meek Manchester United should have been making the noise vs Man City

If Manchester United had shown as much fight on the pitch as they did in the tunnel after the game against Manchester City, the title race might still be alive.

Jose Mourinho took exception to the celebrations in the City dressing room and reportedly sparked a fracas after the visiting side’s 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

It was probably a better battle than the one on the pitch: United approached the derby in a shockingly meek manner.

They let Pep Guardiola’s side do as they pleased. Mourinho ran out of ideas about how to neutralise City.

Sir Alex Ferguson sneeringly called City "noisy neighbours".

He could not have imagined one of his successors knocking on their door telling them to turn the volume down.

After all, United should be the ones making the racket at Old Trafford.

FA assesses referee's Manchester derby report

The FA were today assessing referee Michael Oliver’s report from Man City's derby win before deciding whether to take action over an alleged tunnel bust-up at full-time.

City's victory saw them surge 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League; a result which reportedly prompted an altercation outside the dressing rooms with players and staff from both clubs said to be involved.

It has been confirmed to Standard Sport that a series of heated exchanges took place, with Jose Mourinho at the centre of several incidents as the United boss expressed his belief that City’s celebrations were over zealous.

Two unconfirmed reports suggested Mourinho had milk and water thrown at him, while another suggested City coach Mikel Arteta required medical treatment after being seen with blood on his face.
