Sam Long14 January 2016

Arsenal have signed Mohamed Elneny from Basel, the Premier League club confirmed this morning.

The 23-year-old midfielder has become Arsene Wenger's first signing of the January transfer window and is in contention to go straight into the squad for Sunday's trip to face Stoke City.

The experienced Egypt international began his career with El Mokawloon in the Egyptian Premier League before joining the Swiss club in 2013.

Elneny helped Basel win three Super League titles and has scored six goals in 28 league appearances during the first half of the current campaign.

A club statement read: "The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes. Everyone at Arsenal would like to welcome Mohamed to the club.

Elneny's move to the Emirates proved to be complicated due to new Premier League work permit guidelines but has finally been completed and the midfielder will provide a boost to Wenger's central midfield options with both Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin currently out injured.

Speaking after Wednesday night's thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool, Wenger revealed he is hopeful the midfielder will be able to feature against Mark Hughes' side.
