Defender Nathan Ake has signed a five-year contract at Chelsea and will continue his development at newly promoted Premier League side Watford this season.

The 20-year-old joined the Blues in 2011 and won the FA Youth Cup in his first season at the club before he was handed his first-team debut in December 2012.

The Dutchman made five appearances for the west Londoners last season, and also spent a brief spell on loan at Championship side Reading, but has not been deemed worthy of a place in Jose Mourinho's squad this term.

Competition for places at Stamford Bridge and with regular game time unlikely to be afforded to the youngster as the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill ad Kurt Zouma are all ahead of him in the pecking order, Ake has agreed to move to Vicarage Road temporarily.

Watford manager Quique Flores has spent £21m this summer and Ake has become the Spaniard's 11th signing as the club attempt to build a squad capable of retaining their place in the top flight.

Ake's new contract will keep him at Chelsea until 2019.
