Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he wants to sign a striker but only the 'best in the world' will be capable of improving his squad at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils secured a 0-0 draw against Newcastle on Saturday and have scored just two goals in their opening three Premier League fixtures as captain Wayne Rooney has struggled for form in front of goal.

Van Gaal also has James Wilson and Javier Hernandez to call upon, plus Memphis Depay, but doubts have surfaced in regards to the frontline's firepower.

United have been linked with a move for Barcelona forward Neymar but the Spanish club are believed to be resisting any interest in the 23-year-old, who was the joint top scorer in the Champions League last season with 10 goals.

Van Gaal is not against bringing in a new addition before the transfer window closes but he is adamant United will only pursue a player of the highest calibre.

"When he is the best striker in thew world then yes, we need him, but that's what I have been saying fro two months.

"He has to contribute but when he cannot contribute in our eyes, then we won't buy any striker. But when he does, we shall buy," he told the Sun.

The Dutchman also warned that even the very best players can find it difficult to adjust to the demands of Premier League football.

"You never know because you have seen it, for example, with Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria last season. They are great players but they have to adapt to the culture of Manchester United. You have that with every buy."

Neymar has three years left on his contract at the Camp Nou and missed the club's opening fixture of the La Liga season - a 1-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao - as he is suffering from the mumps.
