O’Neill wants a reaction after League struggles

Martin O’Neill is hoping to kick-start Sunderland’s season tonight by reaching the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup.

Sunderland host Middlesbrough on the back of a patchy run in the Premier League, having picked up just two wins from eight matches.

“I’ll make one or two changes but it’s a game we’re still taking very, very seriously,” said Sunderland boss O’Neill.

“The cup is very important to us and our fans and we want to progress.

“We’ve had a stop-start season but we’ve reached this period in which we’re capable of putting a run together and that’s what we must try to do between now and Christmas, starting tonight.”
