Pontus Jansson wants Neal Maupay to stay at Brentford with him and help fire the club to the Premier League.

Maupay scored 25 goals in the Championship last season and he is now attracting interest from Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa, Brighton and Sheffield United.

The striker returned to training this week after being sent home from their pre-season tour last Saturday to clear his head amid speculation surrounding him.

And Jansson, who joined Brentford for around £5.5million from Leeds United this summer, wants the Frenchman to stay put this year to help the Bees earn promotion to the Premier League.

“For me, he is one of the best attackers in the Championship - last year was a good statement of that. I would be really happy if he stays, I hope he does,” said Jansson.

“I think there is something buzzing around the club. When Brentford have a good day they can beat anyone. For me it is stupid if you don’t aim for it (promotion).

“If it is the top two or top six, it doesn’t matter, but I think you have to aim for that. You want to push yourself to the maximum level and for me it is clearly a goal.”
