Adam Lallana could find himself in hot water after he was sent off during Liverpool under-23's defeat to Tottenham on Monday night.

The midfielder was playing for the development side as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.

The England international was sent off for violent conduct after reacting angrily to an aerial challenge from Spurs' George Marsh, grabbing the 19-year-old by the neck before team-mate Danny Ings intervened.

The former Southampton midfielder, who has made just 6 League appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side starting just one game, didn't even wait for the referee to give him his marching orders as he stormed down the tunnel.

Liverpool ended a miserable evening with nine men after George Johnston was also shown his marching orders in the final minutes of the game.

Liverpool Under-23 manager Neil Critchley was surprised with his players reaction.

“I have never seen Adam react like that,” he told Liverpool’s official website. “I’d like to see the incident again.

“It was ironic as we were just about to bring Liam Millar on.

“He was actually coming off.”

Should he face a three-match ban, it will only apply to under-23 games.
