Tottenham will do well to match Leyton Orient’s 87-year-old Wembley record

It’s time for an intriguing history lesson for Tottenham fans as they prepare to stage all their fixtures at Wembley next season while work continues on their new stadium.

Which other London club has played domestic league games at the national stadium?

Clapton Orient - now Leyton Orient - played twice there in the winter of 1930 while work was carried out on their home in Lea Bridge Road. They beat Brentford 3-0 and Southend United 3-1. A perfect record.

Things have taken a desperate turn for the O’s this year as they dropped out of the Football League. But if they could feel at home in north-west London so long ago, surely Spurs can manage it, too?

Certainly, Tottenham's crowds will be bigger. Only 8, 3019 watched Orient beat Brentford. Then just 1,916 turned up in freezing weather for the Southend match.

Last season's European dates at Wembley were disappointing for Spurs. But this is a side on the cusp of something big. They have to adjust because they simply cannot afford to take a season "off," while they wait to return home. They have too much potential for that.

So an opening home league game there against Chelsea offers them the perfect chance to lay down the right kind of marker at their temporary HQ.

Spurs often start slowly. But their final four fixtures are against Brighton, Watford, WBA and Leicester. The last game is at home. It’s an inviting run-in.

Could they make history and be the first league champions crowned at Wembley?
