Prince William has offered his "huge congratulations" to the England Under-20 squad after they won the World Cup title.

The Young Lions beat Venezuela 1-0 in Sunday's Final to win England's first world title since the senior team lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game before Freddie Woodman denied Adalberto Peñaranda from the penalty spot with less than 20 minutes remaining to preserve the narrow advantage.

And President of The FA HRH The Duke of Cambridge suggested the victory offered a glimpse into a bright future for the national side.

A statement issued through the Kensington Palace Twitter feed said: "Huge congratulations to England on winning the U20 World Cup - high hopes for the future of English football!"

Under-20s boss Paul Simpson echoed the sentiment of Prince William, adding: "Hopefully we can use this as a stepping stone as ultimately the goal is to be successful at senior level.

"This has been a terrific experience for these players to help develop them for senior football."

Former Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke was awarded the Golden Ball, given to the player of the tournament, while Freddie Woodman, godson of ENgland manager Gareth Southgate, won the Golden Glove.
