Rangers draw Villarreal, Rapid Wien and Spartak Moscow in Europa League group stage

Rangers will play Villarreal, Rapid Wien and Spartak Moscow in the Europa League group stage this season.

The Gers are back in the group phase of a European competition for the first time since 2010 and were made to do it the hard way after being reduced to nine men against Russian side Ufa, holding on to secure a 2-1 win to secure their qualification.

Steven Gerrard’s side and arch-rivals Celtic are competing in Europe together for the first time in 10 years.

During that 2007-08 season, Rangers managed an impressive third place finish in a Champions League group that featured Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart, securing qualification for the Uefa Cup with a third place finish.

After seeing off Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting CP and Fiorentina, they reached the final where they fell to Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg.
