Cristiano Ronaldo broke Lionel Messi's all-time record for goals scored in a single Champions League campaign during Tuesday's rampant victory over Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid booked their place in a first European Cup final since 2002 with a 5-0 aggregate win, thanks to doubles from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo on the night.

The Portugal international, who was tied with Messi's record of 14 goals before the semi-final second leg, fired home Real's third as they threatened to embarrass their hosts.

Ronaldo wheeled away counting to 15 with his hands before Gareth Bale arrived to congratulate the beaming record-breaker.

And the 29-year-old set about extending the record to 16 late in the game when he sent a low free-kick under the leaping Bayern wall and into Manuel Neuer's bottom corner.

Messi managed his record haul in the 2011-12 season, but Ronaldo's tally is made all the more impressive as he missed Real's home group game against Galatasaray earlier in the competition.

The Ballon d'Or winner also joins an elite group of players who have scored over 50 goals for Los Blancos in the European Cup and will head to Lisbon one goal behind Messi in the all-time Champions League goalscorers list.
