With a second FA Cup crown and guaranteed Champions League football Arsenal enter this transfer window in a strong position. But will Arsene Wenger make the most of it?
The clear need for a physical midfield presence seems to have been at least somewhat answered by the emergence of Francis Coquelin, whose performances were critical to away victories in Manchester in 2015. But with futures of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini very much in doubt the manager needs to decide whether now is the time to move for one of his long-term targets, a list that includes Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin.
Elsewhere in the side upgrades may be needed as the Gunners look to close the gap on runaway champions Chelsea. And it may be that their London rivals are Wenger’s first stop as he looks to bring in a new goalkeeper. Petr Cech is almost certain to end his 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge this summer, but Arsenal will face challengers from across for the continent and may have to turn their attention elsewhere.
Perhaps the final position that Wenger will turn to is the attacking focal point, where pundits clamour for a “world-class striker” that may or may not be available. Can Arsenal do better than Olivier Giroud? Perhaps. But will the right player appear this window? Perhaps not.
In the bid to win a first championship in 12 years the Gunners will need injections of quality, but who should be on their shopping list?
