An emotional Robbie Savage had the proud honour of introducing his son, Charlie, as he made his Manchester United debut against Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old started the night on a bench made up largely of United academy graduates as interim boss Ralf Rangnick took the chance to rotate his squad, with top spot in the group and a place in the last-16 already secured.

Savage senior was working as a co-commentator for BT Sport during the match against the Swiss side and was offered the floor as his son replaced Juan Mata late on in the 1-1 draw.

“Coming on for Manchester United: Charlie Savage, for Juan Mata,” Savage said. “Wow, I never believed I’d say those words here at Manchester United.

“What a proud day for my boy, all the hard work. What a proud day for me, for his mother, his nanna, his grandparents, and most importantly, for that boy there, Charlie Savage. I’m so proud of him, it’s an amazing moment.”

Robbie Savage was himself on United’s books as a youngster, part of the famous FA Youth Cup-winning ‘Class of ‘92’ but never played a first-team game and left in 1994 to join Crewe Alexandra.

As well as Charlie Savage, fellow youngster Zidane Iqbal also made his United debut, as did 35-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton, in his second spell at the club.
