Everton boss Roberto Martinez has admitted he wants to extend Romelu Lukaku's temporary spell at Goodison Park.

Lukaku has enjoyed an impressive stint on loan at the Merseyside club from Chelsea, scoring 14 goals, but he is due to return to west London at the end of the current campaign.

The Blues have been without a consistently firing striker all season and many have questioned manager Jose Mourinho's decision to allow the 20-year-old to leave Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the season.

But now Martinez is ready to try and test Chelsea's resolve with an attempt to keep the Belgium international at Everton beyond the summer.

The Toffees boss will reportedly be backed by a £20million war chest in the summer as he bids to strengthen the top-four chasing club and he believes Lukaku is best-placed at Everton.

"I think if there is something we can give that he can’t get elsewhere it’s enjoying his football," Martinez said.

"In football, as a player, you can take football happiness for granted very quickly. As a young man to be important in a football club and being happy is vital.

"Nobody can guarantee you that unless you’ve experienced it, or know who you are going to work with. It’s as simple as that really."

Lukaku has battled to carve out a role for himself at Stamford Bridge since he moved from Anderlecht in 2011, spending last season on loan at West Brom, but Martinez believes the forward can benefit from a settled position at Everton that suits his game.

Martinez added: "You are not gambling on him doing things well, because you know what he can bring and it’s a perfect fit in that respect."

"I think if you look at the way he has developed this season he’s aware of that.

"If we can extend his stay then fantastic, if not we will have great memories."
