Roberto Soldado has apologised to Tottenham supporters for failing to meet their expectations after the club announced that they have agreed a deal to sell him to La Liga side Villarreal on Friday evening.

The striker signed for Spurs from Valencia in the summer of 2013 but struggled to reproduce his best form at White Hart Lane.

The Spaniard scored just seven top-flight goals during his two seasons at the club and fell down Mauricio Pochettino's pecking order following the emergence of Harry Kane.

Although Soldado has admitted that he found his brief spell in England difficult, he was full of praise for the club's supporters on social media after his exit had been confirmed: "These two years have been difficult for me, but I wouldn't change this experience for nothing in the world.

"I am sorry for not being able to meet the expectations that Tottenham had put on me.

"I felt at home from the first day. I can only give many thanks to Tottenham for allowing me to represent the best club in England.

"Thanks for the treatment received from all the staff, from my teammates and the fans, that didn't stop cheering and supporting me every second I was on the pitch," he added.

Soldado was one of seven players Spurs signed during the same summer that Gareth Bale completed his world record move to Real Madrid and the forward's departure means that only Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela remain at the club.
