Roy Hodgson won’t rely on signings in January

Roy Hodgson has warned against pinning hopes on big-money signings in the January transfer market to save Liverpool's season after they lost 2-0 at Everton in front of new owner John W Henry.

American billionaire Henry, whose NESV group paid £300million to buy Liverpool last Friday, has promised boss Hodgson funds in the New Year — and he certainly needs it.

But Liverpool are already in a relegation battle and with at least two-and-a-half months to wait for the cavalry to arrive, it's no wonder Hodgson looks stressed.

He appeared tetchy and jumpy yesterday as he faced journalists following a miserable display in which Liverpool were overpowered by their city rivals, conceding goals by Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta to go second bottom in the League.

Only West Ham sit below the Reds at present — and only courtesy of an inferior goal difference — and Hodgon's bizarre assertion that the performance was "as good as I've seen a Liverpool team play under my management" hardly helped his stature with the Kop, who haven't taken to the former Fulham boss.

Fortunately for Hodgson, he has already been assured of his future by new owner Henry but he also knows the arrival of NESV will not help him in the short term.

He said: "What can they do to help right now? Nothing. We think there are a lot of things that need sorting out at a level outside of the football field and they will help there. But when it comes to playing we have got the squad we've got and we'll have to keep working with them.

"Of course the January transfer window is
something that interests us and we'll have to do our scouting work on future transfers."

Seamus Coleman set up the opening goal with a wonderful run down the right, cutting a ball back for Cahill to lash home in the 34th minute. And Arteta sealed a deserved victory for the hosts with a thunderous effort from 20 yards after a Leighton Baines corner was not properly cleared five minutes into the second half.
