Stoke chairman Peter Coates believes Ryan Shawcross has a long England career ahead of him.

Shawcross arrived at England's Watford training base ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Egypt just 24 hours after his sending off against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old's challenge broke Aaron Ramsey's leg and ruled his opponent out of the rest of the campaign.

Shawcross left the field in tears and was condemned for his actions by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

But Stoke insist the former Manchester United reserve is not a malicious player and deserves international recognition.

Coates said: "Everyone at the club is proud of what Ryan has achieved since he came to the Britannia Stadium and it is clear that he has a great future in the game.

"His development into one of the best defenders in the country has been outstanding and we firmly believe this will be the start of a long international career for him."

Shawcross is the first City player to be named in an England squad since winger Mark Chamberlain appeared for his country in 1984.

Manager Tony Pulis said: "The timing of this has been most unfortunate, but it should not detract from the fact that Ryan has made remarkable progress and deserves his call-up.

"While we are all deeply saddened at what has happened to Aaron, we believe that Ryan is worthy of this chance to represent his country and hopefully put himself in contention for a place in the England squad for the World Cup finals."
