Southampton denied Arsenal the chance to go top of the Barclays Premier League with a thumping 4-0 win at St Mary's as Stoke increased the pressure on Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal with a 2-0 victory at the Britannia.
Following defeat for leaders Leicester at Liverpool, the Gunners could have taken over at the top with a fourth straight league win in Boxing Day's evening kick-off.
However, full-back Cuco Martina marked his first Premier League start of the season with a superb swerving 25-yard strike to put the Saints ahead after 19 minutes before Shane Long (55) doubled the lead.
Saints captain Jose Fonte (69) and another for Long in stoppage time completed a miserable night for Arsene Wenger's men on the south coast.
