Manchester United fought back for a point at Southampton as Mason Greenwood’s second-half strike earned a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s on Sunday.

Fred deflected a Che Adams effort into David de Gea’s net to put Southampton a goal up by half-time, but Greenwood levelled after the break to ensure United matched Arsenal’s Premier League record of unbeaten away games.

James Ward-Prowse threatened with an early free-kick at St Mary’s, where United settled after a bright start by the hosts.

Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick caused a penalty box scramble, which ended with the ball coming back off the bar and Anthony Martial’s follow-up header being stopped on the line.

United continued strongly as they pushed to take the lead on the south coast.

The centre-back fizzed a ball across to Moussa Djenepo, whose first-time ball to Adam Armstrong was flicked on to Che Adams, who took a couple of touches and struck home from 20 yards via a deflection off Fred.

Fernandes was booked for his remonstrations with the officials.

Saints took the lead in the 30th minute after Jack Stephens left Fernandes in a heap on the right.

Saints went into half-time 1-0 ahead, with the Premier League changing the award of the opening goal from Adams to a Fred own goal.

Pogba poked a Fernandes ball on to Greenwood, whose shot beat Alex McCarthy and found the back of the net in front of the raucous travelling support.

Armstrong sent over a smart cross and Tino Livramento lashed over for the hosts, before United levelled in the 55th minute.
