Mind the gaffe: Subway’s Liverpool poster pictured two images of Raheem Sterling

Subway Australia have come under fire from Liverpool fans after a poster promoting the club’s pre-season friendly against Adelaide United featured two pictures of Raheem Sterling.

The US-based franchise were announced as one of Liverpool’s global partners last summer, but their promotional advert certainly is not making the ‘positive difference’ the club had hoped for.

After all, fans might count themselves lucky to see the wantaway Sterling just once when the teams meet next month, let alone twice, with Manchester City hotly pursuing the England international.

Pictured twice alongside Philippe Coutinho, the 20-year-old star was quickly spotted by Reds fans, who soon mocked the sandwich company.

Mitch Franco was quick to spot the clanger, writing: “Subway obviously thought that was two different players.”

Meanwhile, Jarred Aoun came up with an ingenious reason for Sterling’s potential sale this summer, commenting: “This is why we are selling sterling. We have a second one hahahaha.”

Lee Patouras added: “Stick to making sandwiches subway.”

Perhaps Subway can take some consolation from the clanger dropped by Dunkin’ Donuts back in February, when they replaced the Hillsborough memorial flames with milkshakes on the Liverpool club crest.

The US coffee and donut chain, which is one the club's global commercial partners angered supporters after posting a tweet with the conceptual crest which also replaced the Shankly Gates with donuts and the words 'You'll Never Walk Alone' with 'America Runs On Dunkin'.
