Time’s up for struggling John Barnes and Peter Taylor

In the firing line: John Barnes has been sacked by Tranmere after a poor start to the season
11 April 2012

John Barnes and his assistant Jason McAteer were today sacked by Tranmere after winning only two of their 11 League One games this season.

The pair took charge in June but their brief reign ended with the club 22nd in the table. On Tuesday, they lost to League Two side Bury in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson said: "Unfortunately, results have not gone our way this season and we are at the wrong end of the table."

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Barnes got his first managerial job at Celtic in June 1999 but was sacked nine months later after a shock cup defeat by Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Barnes took charge of Jamaica last year but quit after six months.

Wycombe, who are one place below Tranmere in League One, also announced that manager Peter Taylor has left the club by mutual consent.

The former England Under-21 manager guided Wycombe to promotion last season but they have scored only nine goals in 11 League games.

Fulham confirmed today they are pursuing West Ham for £700,000 in compensation over the Carlos Tevez affair.

It is understood that Fulham's claim is the principal reason why Sir Ken Macdonald QC, former director of public prosecutions, has been recruited as a consultant at Upton Park.

His job will be to fight legal action by Fulham, and possibly two other clubs, who claim they lost out on Premier League prize money as a result of Tevez playing for West Ham in the 2006-07 season.
