Tottenham missed the chance to move into the Premier League top four as they lost against Newcastle.

Ayoze Perez scored the winner in the third minute of stoppage time when his low shot squirmed under Hugo Lloris.

Spurs had earlier gone ahead through Eric Dier in the first half before Aleksandar Mitrovic equalised with 16 minutes left.

The game was heading for a draw before Perez scored to move Newcastle out of the bottom three. Lloris should have done better and the goal saw Spurs suffer their first defeat since the opening day of the season.

Spurs were on a high after their Europa League win against Monaco but the first half was largely uneventful until Dier opened the scoring six minutes before the break.

Harry Kane forced an early save from Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot before Siem de Jong saw his goal-bound shot blocked by team-mate Papiss Cisse.

Elliot twice denied Erik Lamela, the hat-trick hero against Monaco, but he could not stop Spurs going ahead after 39 minutes.

Dier met a Christian Eriksen corner and glanced his header past Elliot to put Spurs in control.

They almost doubled their lead minutes before half-time but Kane could not get on the end of a Danny Rose cross that flashed across the six-yard box.

Newcastle had a decent chance to level eight minutes into the second half but Cisse missed the target after being played through by Moussa Sissoko.

Spurs never looked convincing and they conceded an equaliser on 76 minutes.

A free-kick from the right was headed across goal by Fabricio Coloccini and Mitrovic stabbed home after Hugo Lloris had saved a Chancel Mbemba header.

Perez won it in the 93rd minute when his shot went through Lloris.
