Roberto Soldado is expected to sign for Villarreal in the coming hours after passing a medical with the Spanish club.

The Spain forward has agreed terms on a move from Tottenham and although the exact nature of the deal is still to be finalised, it is not expected to obstruct the 30-year-old’s departure.

Villarreal were keen for an initial loan deal and although Spurs would prefer to sell Soldado permanently, they may accept the terms on offer if it means creating space in the squad for new signings.

Soldado joined Tottenham for £26million in the summer of 2013 but managed only 16 goals in 76 appearances for the club, and scored just once in the Premier League last season.

The forward was desperate to join Villarreal, which is close to his hometown of Valencia, and Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed on Thursday that Soldado had been given permission to discuss terms.
