Daniel Levy hopes Harry Kane will one day have a statue outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and insists the England captain “can absolutely” win a trophy at the club.

Kane recently became the all-time top goalscorer at Spurs but he is yet to get his hands on silverware and, with his contract expiring in 2024, his future is uncertain.

The 29-year-old has constantly said he is open to staying at Tottenham, but he has made it clear he wants to compete for trophies and Spurs crashed out of all cup competitions in disappointing fashion this season.

Kane is likely to have talks over his future at the end of the season and chairman Levy insists the striker can realise his ambitions at his boyhood club.

“He can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs,” said Levy, speaking at the debating society of Cambridge University on March 14. “But being a legend is also important. The fact that he’s top scorer for Tottenham Hotspur, he’s making history.

“I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium.”

Tottenham have not won a trophy since the 2008 League Cup and they are no closer to ending their drought following a difficult season in which they sacked Antonio Conte.

Spurs face a rebuild under a new manager next season and Levy admits the club has “not been where it needs to be” in recent years.

“If you go back in history, Tottenham was a club that has a lot of history because it has won things,” said Levy. “In recent times, it’s not been where it needs to be. We’re on a journey and we need to get better success on the pitch.

“But we have been in the Champions League a number of times and we almost got there, winning the ultimate, which would have been winning the Champions League.”
