Dele Alli will undergo a late fitness check to determine whether he can play for Tottenham at West Ham on Wednesday.

The midfielder appeared to have suffered damage in the warm-up before the 2-1 win over Swansea when he kicked the ground during shooting practice. Although Alli played the full 90 minutes, he is doubtful for the match at Upton Park.

Alli expressed optimism that he could recover in time but Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino said: “Dele had a problem before the Swansea game and during the game he suffered some different things. We need to assess him tomorrow.

“There is a long time before the game and then we will decide. I cannot say at this stage whether he will be available. We just need to assess him.”

Tottenham are already without key men like Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele and to lose Alli would be a blow, especially at such a vital point of the campaign.

If Alli were absent on Wednesday, it would also place a question mark over his availability for Saturday’s derby with Arsenal, as there are less than 72 hours between the end of the West Ham game and the start of the Gunners clash.

Meanwhile, Pochettino laughed off suggestions from Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri that Tottenham are now favourites for the title.

Second-placed Spurs are two points behind Ranieri’s leaders and the Italian has claimed they are best-equipped to take the crown.

But Pochettino said: “It was a joke and I laugh a bit. In football it’s good to play and joke a bit like this but we have known since the start of the season what our objective was.

“If you remember the end of last season, our aim was to reduce the gap to the top teams, and we have learned and improved a lot in that respect. We need to fight and keep the same mentality.

“Leicester are at the top and they have pressure like all the teams below. We have to keep our level and maintain our fitness, keep our mentality and we will see what happens."
