Tottenham will prioritise winning a trophy over returning to the Champions League via a top-four finish next season, according to Lucas Moura.

Spurs leapfrogged Wolves into sixth place on goal difference and secured Europa League football with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on the final day after goals by Harry Kane and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Jose Mourinho has twice won the Europa League, most recently with Manchester United in 2017 and the Spurs manager has already set his sights on a hat-trick next season, predicting his side would do "something beautiful" in the competition following the draw at Selhurst Park.

Mourinho also claimed Spurs "belong" in the Champions League after four consecutive seasons in the competition they came so close to winning last June.

The Europa League offers a route into the Champions League for the winners and Lucas shares Mourinho's optimism that Spurs can go all the way next season – but said winning any trophy is the priority over returning to Uefa's top table.

"Yes, it's a target to get back in the Champions League but the main target is to win a trophy," the Brazilian told Standard Sport.

"We really deserve it, so do the club and the fans. We have a very good squad and the structure that we need [to win silverware]. So we need to target this – to win a trophy and then, of course, get back to the Champions League."

"Of course, [winning the Europa League] must be a big target for us," Lucas added. "It's a very beautiful competition and I'm sure we're capable of winning it. But now it's time to rest, to enjoy our holidays.

"We've worked for 12 months, it's been very tough and we need to rest, enjoy our time off and come back stronger. But I really think we can win the Europa League."

European football will boost Mourinho's summer transfer budget but his side need another favour from Chelsea to be sure of a place in the Europa League group stage, with a one-legged qualifying round on September 17 awaiting Spurs if mid-table Arsenal beat the Blues in the FA Cup final.

Seventh-placed Wolves, who lost 2-0 at Chelsea on the final day, can still book a place in the Europa League if the Blues win the FA Cup, or seal Champions League football by winning Uefa's secondary club competition this season.

Spurs will not be denied their European place if Wolves and Arsenal win the Europa League and FA Cup respectively, however, with Uefa rules allowing up to nine European qualifiers per nation.

Mourinho said at Palace: "Of course everybody that one day plays Champions League doesn't want to go back and play Europa League but was the only thing possible after such a difficult season for club, for the players and in my case also for myself.

"But arriving 14th [in the table] and handling things is not bad at all. I am quite happy next season we play in Europa League and it's just a question to motivate ourselves for that competition and try to motivate the fans to support us and try to do something beautiful."
